Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

This is Highland Park's third year implementing a program called Social Emotional Learning, or SEL. This program teaches students skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, and problem solving. Throughout the year, students explore these topics in class through student activities and class discussions using a curriculum called "Second Step". Access more information by following this link:http://www.cfchildren.org/second-step.aspx. Austin ISD is part of national research conducted by CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning). Learn more about the district's efforts on this front by visiting: http://www.austinisd.org/academics/sel.

'Peace Areas' are another critical component to the roll-out of SEL in schools. You may notice laminated posters around campus and in every classroom marking this established place for a student or students to calm down and use some of the strategies for problem-solving learned. Invite your child to design one for home, too!

Your child will be learning a lot this year and they will need your help! Home Links are simple, fun activities for you and your child to complete together. They are a great way for you to understand what your child is learning and for your child to show you what he or she knows. Not every lesson has a Home Link assigned, so you will not always see them on a weekly basis.
